Freeman Technology celebrates 2012 Queen’s Award success E-mail
Saturday 21st April 2012

QA NewsPowder characterisation specialist Freeman Technology is delighted to announce that the company is to receive the 2012 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category International Trade. Recognised around the world, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are Britain’s most coveted commercial prizes and this appreciation of Freeman Technology’s rapidly growing international presence follows the company’s 2007 Queen’s Award in the category of Innovation.

"Freeman Technology’s first Queen’s Award in 2007 celebrated our development of the FT4 Powder Rheometer  and the unique contribution it makes to understanding powders – and to supporting manufacturing industry in its drive to improve efficiency and productivity,” said Managing Director, Tim Freeman. "Five years on, not only do we have a proven instrument, we have unparalleled real-world experience, expertise and applications knowledge that supports the use of the system. It is this combination that is proving so powerful to companies across the globe, and which has driven our international business growth, resulting in a doubling of our export sales in just three years.”

The FT4 Powder Rheometer delivers information that helps powder processing industries to maximise process and product understanding, and accelerate R&D, formulation and commercialisation, as well as supporting process optimisation. FT4 systems are installed in many different sectors, including the chemical, pharmaceutical, toners, foods, powder coatings, metals, ceramics, cosmetics and other industries.

Paying tribute to colleagues around the world, Tim Freeman confirmed that 2012 is proving to be a highly significant year for Freeman Technology,  with a great deal of planning and development coming to fruition.

"Winning this Queen’s Award in the International Trade category really affirms Freeman Technology’s establishment in world markets and reflects the commitment and hard work of all our teams and partners” he said. “Ever since the launch of the FT4 Powder Rheometer more than 8 years ago, strong sales have been supported directly in Europe and the United States, and through distribution partners in Japan. Now with our experience and expertise across many different applications, we are successfully entering many new markets where the FT4 is helping to solve the same problems that challenge powder processors the world over.”

In response to increasing demand for the FT4, Freeman Technology has strengthened sales and applications  support in a number of territories. In the past 12 months the company has established a new direct operation in North America and extended its distribution partnerships to include China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, all underpinned by a move last year to larger premises in the UK, extending the scope for manufacturing and support.

"The key to our success and the success of our customers is that we now have many years of research to draw upon, to help our customers find their way through the complexity of powder processing. This gives us a deep understanding of powder characterisation and how to interpret and apply the data to the many different challenges that powder processors face. We have some exciting times ahead as we continue to grow and learn about new and existing powders and processes."  www.freemantech.co.uk

Tim Freeman leads Understanding & measuring powder properties workshop at Powder & Bulk Solids India E-mail
Monday 7th March 2012

535_01Tim Freeman, Managing Director of powder characterisation company Freeman Technology, will lead a workshop on ‘Understanding and measuring powder flow properties’ at the Powder & Bulk Solids Exhibition and Conference in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, which runs from 13-15 March 2012.

The workshop takes place on Wednesday 14 March at 10.00am with presentations by  Tim Freeman and Shashikant Gurav, Business Manager of Aimil Ltd., Freeman Technology’s distribution partner in India. Pre-registration is advised and full details can be found at http://www.viablesoft.com/BulksolidConference/index.asp.

Traditionally, manufacturing industry has relied on the knowledge of its engineers to optimise processes, while problems are often overcome through understanding that is based on previous experience. However in today’s economic climate, efficiency and quality are paramount, so a thorough understanding of powder behaviour is essential in designing the operations that make up a process.

The first part of the ‘Understanding and measuring powder flow properties’ workshop illustrates how recent developments in powder characterisation allow process engineers to predict the way in which a material will behave during processing and how best to configure equipment settings for optimal powder and process compatibility. It will also demonstrate how this information can be fed back in at the development stage to provide processability specifications.  Also how it can be used to evaluate the causes of process interruptions or reduced product quality.

The second part of the workshop will involve a practical demonstration of the measurement of powder characteristics using the FT4 Powder Rheometer.

Freeman Technology’s FT4 Powder Rheometer, backed by the company’s unique process-focused approach to powder characterisation, delivers critical information that is essential for understanding and efficiently managing and processing powders. Providing automated shear testing, dynamic flowability and bulk properties measurements, the FT4 is a universal powder tester for formulators, process engineers and QA specialists. University of Bath PhD student wins Powder Flow 2011 poster prize sponsored by Freeman Technology E-mail

Wednesday 14th December 2011

The Freeman Technology-sponsored prize for the best poster at December’s Powder Flow 2011 conference was presented to Hanne Kinnunen, a PhD student at the University of Bath in the UK.  Her presentation ‘The impact of loaded drug dose and the surface roughness of the coarse lactose carrier to the fluidisation characteristics of dry powder inhaler formulations’ was co-authored with Jag Shur and Robert Price, also from the Pharmaceutical Surface Science Research Group in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at Bath, and Gerald Hebbink from DFE Pharma in Borcolo, The Netherlands.

The primary aim of the work was to investigate the impact of increasing drug concentration on the fluidisation properties of dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations prepared with carriers having different surface characteristics. The results indicated that the fluidisation properties of the formulations prepared with the carrier that had a higher degree of surface roughness were less susceptible to change in fluidisation properties when the concentration of the drug was increased.

Tim Freeman, Director of Operations at Freeman Technology was part of the judging team. “It was really pleasing to see a strong set of posters and the judges certainly didn’t have an easy task,” he said. “Our congratulations go to Hanne and I’d like to wish her every success with her continuing research work.”

Powder Flow 2011 is a one-day conference that was held in London on 6 December, and followed a successful inaugural event in 2009.  As well as providing the £250 poster prize, Freeman Technology exhibited the FT4 Powder Rheometer at the event.
