Cosmetic Testing with the FT4 Powder Rheometer

Ten years on...!

Freeman Technology this year celebrates ten years in powder testing and it has certainly been a pivotal time for understanding these challenging materials. Leaving behind the simplistic idea of trying to define the complexities of powders with just a single number, developers of powder testing instrumentation such as the FT4 Powder Rheometer have combined powerful complementary techniques to deliver a toolkit to help tackle the considerable challenges of solids processing. In turn, significant effort has gone into understanding how the powder properties measured relate to in-process behaviour. This 'work in progress' holds the key to a better powder processing future, across all industry sectors. With reproducible, relevant powder characterization now a reality, it is possible to ensure compatibility between powder properties and the processing environment. If you have a particular process or challenge you would like to discuss, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Advancing data analysis

In the course of the next few weeks we will be releasing the latest version of the FT4 Data Analysis software package. Once launched, the package will be supplied with all new systems and also offered to existing customers as a free download allowing immediate upgrade.

This latest version of Data Analysis is a ground up redesign and provides many new and powerful features. These include:-

  • The ability to analyse results from different test methodologies within one application, removing the need for multiple sessions
  • A new, clearer layout and context sensitive menus providing a more intuitive user interface
  • More display options and greater flexibility allowing users to modify graphs to suit their requirements
  • Greater access to detailed test information and additional options for exporting raw data

Taking the chair

Having recently been appointed as chair of the AAPS Process Analytical Technology Focus Group, Tim Freeman is looking forward to inviting contributions from within the pharmaceutical industry, aiming to disseminate new ideas and share best practice. The mission of the Focus Group is to provide leadership in the area of Process Analytical Technology and anyone wishing to know more can contact Tim directly at tim(AT)freemantech.co.uk.

We are actively looking for new members, so do get in touch if this is of interest.  Further information about the group is also available by clicking here.

Applications online

Coming very soon to www.freemantech.co.uk is a new set of resources being built into our website. Each in a series of application notes, which starts with a basic introduction to powders, will be accompanied by a short online audiovisual presentation. In the coming months this series will build to include industry-specific topics as well as common issues.

Control caking

The key to controlling caking - the formation of agglomerated material from discrete particles or granules - lies in managing environmental conditions so that feed or product remains in an optimal state. A new white paper describes the way in which powder rheometers can assist by measuring the changes in powder properties during the caking process - as a function of humidity and consolidation for example.

Watch and listen

At the recent PTXi event in Chicago Tim Freeman took time out to make a video presentation on the Freeman Technology booth. This short film guides viewers through different aspects of powder testing and their importance, and briefly demonstrates the use of the FT4 Powder Rheometer. View this and download other multimedia presentations including recorded webinars and podcasts via a new page on the Freeman Technology website.
