Viewpoint - meeting points

Attending conferences and trade shows is important to our business, as well as being something we enjoy. Exchanging views and ideas with people working in the front line of powder processing informs our systems and applications development, and helps us to fully support you in understanding your powders.

This past quarter has provided many such opportunities. Following the presentation of a paper at September's Particle Systems Analysis 2005 conference in Stratford, UK, the Freeman team exhibited at Powtech in Nürnberg in October, and at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual meeting held last month in Nashville. At all of these, feedback on the range of new options introduced this year for the FT4 Powder Rheometer has reinforced the view that our concept of a universal powder tester is welcomed. Read on to find out about the latest addition to the system's capabilities.

We look forward to meeting you in 2006, and wish you a successful and prosperous year ahead.

Reg Freeman, Managing Director

Wall friction - fast, fully automated measurement

The latest option for the FT4 Powder Rheometer provides fully automated measurement of wall friction using standard or custom materials in contact with powders under test - with a measurement time of just 10 minutes. The wall friction module comes with a set of four grade 304-stainless steel discs having various surface finishes. The simplicity of the discs means that additional specific materials/surface conditions can be made very easily.

This month has seen the installation of an FT4 Powder Rheometer at the Ecole des Mines in Albi, France where it will be used by Professor John Dodds and his team in research work on powders and processes. This follows successful evaluations confirming the FT4's sensitivity and ability to differentiate between similar powders. One of seven such establishments in France specialising in Engineering and Technology, the Ecole des Mines, Albi has a focus on Process Engineering. It houses research centres in Powders and Processes, Tools for Materials Processing, Industrial Engineering, and Energy and the Environment.

The FT4 will be used initially as a characterisation method in a project on dry powder coating for modifying surface properties of powders. Further use is as an automatic shear cell for high throughput analysis of powder properties.

New brochure for 2006

Our programme of continuing development makes today's FT4 Powder Rheometer a sophisticated universal powder testing system, a concept that is reflected in a new brochure which will be available early in 2006.

Presenting at the World Congress on Particle Technology

Looking ahead to April next year, we are very pleased to be taking an active role in the World Congress on Particle Technology, both as an exhibitor and as part of the congress technical programme. Reg Freeman will give a paper describing studies to investigate the flowability of powders and the effects of flow additives, which will be part of a session on 'Measurements and Analysis of Slightly Consolidated and Fluidized Powders'.
