Having fun!

Powder characterisation may be challenging but it is enormous fun. For us, continuous R&D provides the data for conference papers, new methodologies and better understanding of powder behaviour. The stimulus comes from evaluating industrial materials in relation to processing issues. Perhaps unexpectedly, these issues are common across most powder processing sectors, from explosives to pharmaceuticals. What makes one application issue different from another has less to do with the sector than with material characteristics and the particular processes involved.

The real fun comes from unravelling process requirements and providing possible solutions to problems that may range from new material formulation, through changes to plant or procedures, to improved QC. The end result can be a much better match of material and plant, stemming from greater understanding of powder characteristics and behaviour.

Conferences and exhibitions provide great opportunities for meeting and exchanging ideas, all contributing to progress in understanding powder behaviour. If you have issues to discuss or would simply like to hear our perspectives, then do contact us or see us at an exhibition.... we’d like you to share in the fun!!

Reg Freeman, Managing Director

The latest in aeration control

A new version of the Aeration Control Module for Freeman’s FT4 universal powder tester allows enhanced control and measurement at very low air flow velocities down to 0.02mm/s. Since aeration is arguably the single most important parameter influencing the flow properties of a powder, accurate determination of its effects is critically important.

Volumetric dosing efficiency - find out more

Reg Freeman’s presentation at the Partec 2007 congress in Nuremberg (27-29 March) reports on an examination of volumetric dosing efficiency for a number of different powders, illustrating how the results correlate with powder properties measured by the FT4. Hints & Tips 2 - Reproducibility

Judging by the number of requests we’ve had for copies, our new Hints & Tips series launched in the last issue of this newsletter is proving to be both popular and useful. Hints & Tips 1 focused on the importance of good sampling. Now Hints & Tips 2 looks at Reproducibility. Both are available free on request click here.

Growing again...

With the increasing adoption of the FT4 across a wide range of industries the Freeman team is growing, extending production capacity and ensuring that we always deliver high levels of customer service and support. Now spearheading manufacturing at our UK headquarters are Engineering Technicians Rory Taylor and Dan Milner. Both are graduates with backgrounds in engineering development: Rory joined us last year from Nimbus and Dan, more recently, from QinetiQ. More team news in our next issue.

Out & About

A wealth of conferences and exhibitions through March, April and May will give the Freeman team a great opportunity to meet people from diverse areas of powder processing.
